Spelling Bee

Since 1987, Spelling Bee of Canada has been providing a valuable grass roots community literacy program, that kids from ages 6 – 14 years in Canada can participate. The program aims to provide supportive learning communities, which will encourage students to expand their vocabulary, enhance their communication and literacy skills and expand each student’s self-confidence. The proficiency of Spelling is an integral part of childhood education. Canadian spelling bee competition has 3 levels,  Elementary (6-8 years) , Junior (9-11 years) and Intermediate (12-14 years). More details can be found at Spelling Bee Canada.

The mission of our spelling bee program is to promote English literacy and provide a fun and engaging experience for young students across Kitchener-Waterloo region. Our spelling coach will provide spelling bee skills, guidance and encouragement to young spellers during one hour weekly sessions. Entering a spelling bee competition not only provides a valuable educational experience for your child, but also allows them to engage in healthy fun competition. During the journey preparing spelling bee competition, nor matter win or lose, a spelling bee competition can result in a range of benefits for the growth of your child,  such as:

  • Better vocabulary
  • Self-confidence and conquers stage fright
  • Overall communication skills
  • Competitive spirit
  • Greater knowledge and cognitive skills


DeRin will provide 2 levels of Spelling bee lessons to help students preparing the KW spelling competition held at the end of March, 2020. Some useful information


1. Please click this link to register spelling bee competition.  To participate in the Kitchener-Waterloo Regional Spelling Bee Competition, please select Kitchener/Waterloo as Contestant's Region during registration. 

2. Please note age group for registration is determined on the basis of age of the contestant on December 31, 2019.

3. After registration is closed, (KW Chapter will send out email(s) in January 2020 regarding coaching and regional competition dates and information.

4. Depending upon interest from the contestants, 1-2 in-person coaching sessions will be organized.  First session is normally held January or early February and the second session in early March 2020.

5. KW Regional Spelling Bee Competition time frame: Either last week of March or first week of April 2020.

6. Champion in KW region will attend Provincial competition in May .

Our Coach


H. Watts is an English literature doctoral candidate at the University of Waterloo, with a Masters in English Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Windsor.  She recently won the 2019 University of Waterloo English Graduate Creative Writing Award as well as the 2019 University of Waterloo English Graduate Teaching Assistant Excellence Award. Her current areas of research explore critical disability theories, postmodern English, Irish, and American poetry, and new media. She enjoys reading about cyborgs, yoga, running, kayaking, and watching Seinfeld.
